Yes, you need a visa to visit Kazakhstan but for the citizens of USA there is an option that you don't need to have an invitation from Kazakhstan to have visa. I think you should read more about it on the site of Kazakhstan embassy to USA. And here is their page about obtaining Kazakhstan visa.
