Amazing Landscapes of the Ustyurt Plateau

Ustyurt is a huge desert and a plateau with an area of more than 200,000 kilometers located in the west of Central Asia (in Kazakhstan (Mangystau oblast), Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), between Mangyshlak and Kara-Bogaz-Gol in the west, the Aral Sea and the Amudarya delta in the east. The beach in Golubaya (Blue) Bay is located on the Mangyshlak Peninsula, in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. The beaches of this bay are considered one of the most beautiful places on the peninsula.

You can get here, after leaving the city of Aktau in the direction of the town of Fort-Shevchenko located to the north-west. Golubaya Bay is a perfect combination of clean golden beaches and azure turquoise sea.

Boszhira tract at sunset and at night

Boszhira tract is located in the western part of the Ustyurt Plateau, on Mangyshlak Peninsula in the Mangistau region. The highway Necropolis Becket-Ata – Zhanaozen passes about 20 km from the tract.

As the tract covers a huge area, it will take more than one day to explore it. This place is little known and inaccessible to tourists. Everything is white here – canyons, peaks, mountains-towers, mountains-castles, mountains-yurts, etc.

One day and night in Senek desert

In the north-west of the Ustyurt National Preserve, in the middle of the steppe, there is a small Senek desert, named after Senek village located nearby.

Alien landscapes of the Ustyurt Plateau

The Ustyurt Plateau is a plateau in Kazakhstan (Mangystau region) and Uzbekistan, located between Mangyshlak and the Garabogazköl Gulf in the west, the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya River delta in the east.

According to scientists, the Ustyurt Plateau is a dried-up bottom of the sea existed in these areas about 21 million years ago.

The cave mosque Shakpak Ata

The underground mosque of Shakpak Ata is a unique place, one of the most impressive monuments of Mangystau, the peninsula located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea (Mangystau region).

This mosque is one of the most ancient monuments of Islamic architecture. Also, it has some links with cave temples of ancient religions: Zoroastrianism (fire worship), Hinduism, Buddhism and early Christianity. The photos were taken by Denis Frantsouzov.
