Semey (former Semipalatinsk, renamed in 2007) is a city of East Kazakhstan oblast (region) of Kazakhstan standing on Irtysh river banks. Semey is one the most ancient cities of Kazakhstan. Semey Kazakhstan city history

Semipalatinsk fortress was founded by Russian Tsar voevode Vasiliy Cheredov and his troops in 1718. The fortress was situated on the Irtysh river bank. This place is known as "Ancient Fortress" now. At the end of 19h century Semipalatinsk city was the place of political deportation. The Soviet power was established in Semipalatinsk city in February 1918. In 1997 Semipalatinsk oblast was united with East Kazakhstan oblast with capital in Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Semey city of Kazakhstan is also well-known all over the world as the place where Semipalatinsk nuclear testing area is situated. It is the place where first Soviet nuclear bomb detonated. The total power of all nuclear devices tested on Semipalatinsk area for the period of 1949-1963 is about 2500 nuclear bombs equal the one that destroyed Hiroshima, Japan. The ecological situation in this region was awful. In 1991 the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing area was closed.
