Baikonur cosmodrome future projectsIn December 22, 2004 Russia and Kazakhstan signed a contract about "Russia-Kazakhstan Baiterek IV" joint venture (each country has 50% stake). The construction of Baiterek space launch complex is the main goal of the project. New launch complex is designed to operate with Russian Angara rocket launcher. In 2009 it will be ready for first launches, allowing to launch rockets with a payload of 26 tones to low earth orbit. Current Proton rocket has 20 tons payload. Moreover Angara rocket uses different type of fuel (kerosene with oxygen) which is less harmful to ecology than previous types of fuel. The total cost of the project is about $500 million USD.
