Sayram is a city situated on Sayram Suv river on southeastern Kazakhstan in South Kazakhstan oblast (region). Sayram city is one of the oldest cities of Kazakhstan and even world. In 1999 Sayram city celebrated 3000th anniversary of its founding. Sayram is the place where first Kazakhstan mosque was built. The architectural style of Sayram city has almost Central Asian feel without any Soviet or Russian types of architecture.

Sayram city can be reached by 10-15 buses, taxi or route taxi ride from Shymkent city. Also Shymkent city hosts an airport. It receives domestic flights from Kazakhstan international airports of Almaty and Astana cities. Sayram is a popular site of pilgrimage for Muslims, who pass through on tours arranged around Ahmad Yasavi history.

Sayram Kazakhstan city history

Sayram name was mentioned in the history of Zoroaster. It was referring to a river rising from a nearby mountain. The land was called Sayram elys - "lands near Sayram". The definition of the word "Sayram" is lost except as a place name, though the Turkic languages of the area have accepted it to mean blessing. Also there is a river with name Sayram that runs through Sayram city. Sayram river source is located on 4000 meter Sayram mountain. It is a site of local campgrounds and apple orchards.

Sayram settlement (also called Isfijab and Saryom) was in the hands of Persian, Mongolian and Turkish Empires of Central Asia through the ages. In 980 Sayram town was seized by Qarakhanids. After that Genghis Khan came through doing minor damage comparing to obliteration of Sayram city western neighbor Otrar (Utrar or Farab) city, the birthplace of Al-Farabi. Sayram was a part of Kokand Khanate until 1810, when it was conquered by Bukhara Emirate. In 1864 Sayram town was finally captured by Russian army.
