Baikonur cosmodrome features
The equipment of Baikonur cosmodrome is various allowing launching of manned and unmanned spaceships. Such Russian spaceships as Soyuz, Proton, Dnepr, Zenit are supported. Baikonur cosmodrome is playing an essential role in building and supplying International Space Station.
Baikonur cosmodrome future projects
In December 22, 2004 Russia and Kazakhstan signed a contract about “Russia-Kazakhstan Baiterek IV” joint venture (each country has 50% stake).
The construction of Baiterek space launch complex is the main goal of the project. New launch complex is designed to operate with Russian Angara rocket launcher. In 2009 it will be ready for first launches, allowing to launch rockets with a payload of 26 tones to low earth orbit.
Current Proton rocket has 20 tons payload. Moreover Angara rocket uses different type of fuel (kerosene with oxygen) which is less harmful to ecology than previous types of fuel. The total cost of the project is about $500 million USD.
Baikonur cosmodrome travel info
It is not so easy to travel to Baikonur cosmodrome because it is a military zone guarded by Russian army. But it is still possible to arrange a tour to Baikonur cosmodrome. Certainly you should get acquainted with launches schedule (because the most important reason to visit Baikonur cosmodrome is to admire the launching of spaceship).
