The Ascension Cathedral in Almaty

The Ascension Cathedral (1904-1907), also known as Zenkov’s Cathedral (in honor its architect Andrei Zenkov), is located on the territory of the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen in Almaty. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Kazakhstan of republican significance.
This church is a unique architectural structure – one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world and the tallest Orthodox wooden church. Almaty – the view from above

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan with a population of about 1.8 million people. From 1991 to 1997, it was the capital of the country. The city is located in an intermountain depression at the foot of the mountains of Zailiysky Alatau in the extreme south-east of the republic.
The following photos of Almaty were taken at different times of the day and the year from the foothills surrounding the city and Almaty skyscrapers. The author of the photos published on voxpopuli.kz is the famous Kazakhstan photographer Maxim Zolotukhin.

Park of 28 Panfilovtsev in Almaty

Park of 28 Panfilovtsev is a city park with an area of 18 hectares located in Medeu district of Almaty. Founded in the 1870s, this park in a complex with surrounding buildings is one of the most picturesque city-planning ensembles of Almaty.

Walk around the center of Almaty

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan with a population of about 1.7 million people. It is the only city in the country with a population of more than a million people.

Big Almaty Peak is a mountain 3,682 meters high located just 15 km from Almaty. The peak is perfectly visible in clear weather from almost anywhere in the city and looks like a huge pyramid. From the top of the mountain you can enjoy a beautiful view of Almaty.

Hiking in Butakovskoe Gorge

The picturesque Butakovskoe gorge, located at an altitude of 1,700-2,900 meters above sea level in the mountains of Zailiysky Alatau, within the limits of Almaty, is a great place for hiking.

Opening Ceremony of the Winter Universiade 2017

These days (January 29 – February 8), the 28th Winter Universiade, a multi-sport winter event, is taking place in Almaty. More than 1,600 student-athletes from 578 universities compete for medals.
January 29, the opening ceremony of the universiade took place in the ice palace “Almaty Arena”.

Medeu – a unique high-altitude skating rink

The Medeu is a high-mountain sports complex located near Almaty, the “southern capital” of Kazakhstan, at an altitude of 1,691 meters above sea level, just below the mountain resort Shymbulak (Chimbulak).

In the past few days, Almaty experienced an unprecedented snowfall. Snow depth reached 32 centimeters, in the foothills – 60 cm (normal level – no more than 15-20 cm).

The exhibition of everyday life objects of Kazakh people

September 30, 2016, an exhibition of arts and crafts, objects of everyday life of Kazakh people of the 12th-19th centuries opened in the State Museum of Arts named after A. Kasteyev in Almaty.
All exhibits are part of the collection of the famous Kazakh collector and antiquarian Azat Akimbek. You can see examples of folk crafts – weaving, embroidery, leatherworking, wood, pottery, jewelry and blacksmith art. Photos by: voxpopuli.kz
